Learning Sanctuary
Our Vision
Guided by the scripture "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me," our inclusion support base is dedicated to nurturing, encouraging, and challenging pupils with complex SEND in an environment where every child is deeply valued.
We recognise that for a very small group of children at St John’s, the mainstream classroom can present overwhelming barriers to learning. Positioned thoughtfully along the continuum model toward targeted specialist support, our base creates a safe, flexible sanctuary built on unconditional love and mutual respect. Within this tailored environment, we celebrate each small victory with thankfulness, foster honest relationships rooted in truthfulness, and offer gentle understanding through forgiveness. Powered by the hope we have in Christ, we equip every child with the strength and confidence to overcome challenges, discover their unique strengths, and flourish at their own pace.
Our Rationale
This specialised support base begins with educational and developmental equity. A small group of children with complex Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) find standard, full-time mainstream classroom environments overwhelming or inaccessible due to high sensory, emotional, or academic demands. As these pupils cannot access the age-related mainstream curriculum, the base provides a quiet, tailored sanctuary structured around the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework. By delivering a highly personalised education rooted in early child development, communication, and play-based learning, the provision reduces cognitive overload, builds essential foundational skills, and offers specialised interventions that cannot be effectively delivered in a busy classroom setting.
At the same time, this flexible approach ensures high-quality inclusion without isolating pupils from their peers. Placed towards the less time in mainstream classes end of the continuum model, time spent in the base is fluidly managed according to each child's individual readiness. This allows pupils to make meaningful developmental progress at their own pace while maintaining connections to mainstream lessons, social times, and whole-school life whenever appropriate.
Ultimately, this provision lives out our Church of England commitment to valuing every child as a unique creation. Rooted in Philippians 4:13 ("I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me"), the base translates our school’s core Christian values—nurturing through love, encouraging through truthfulness and forgiveness, and challenging with thankfulness and hope—into practical, daily care, ensuring our most vulnerable learners receive the personalised support they need to flourish spiritually, socially, and academically.
