Healthy Schools

healthy-schools-logoSt. John’s gained Healthy Schools status in 2009. Although the Healthy Schools Award is no longer available the government still supports the programme and provides schools with the Healthy Schools Toolkit In order for schools to maintain and develop the essence of being a healthy school. There are a number of different areas that St. John’s had to improve on and continues to develop in order to maintain being a Healthy School. These include; healthy eating, keeping healthy through exercise, personal and social well-being, citizenship, looking after and improving our environment.

Barnet Partnership for School Sport (BPSS)

The BPSS is a “not for profit” organisation that has been established as a mechanism to retain the outcomes achieved by the School Sport Partnerships, including the organisation of events, competitions, festivals and leadership opportunities with a generic outcome of increasing participation at all levels.

The BPSS is a subscription based membership organisation, lead by the Strategic Manager to:“enable all children and young people in Barnet schools to become confident, physically competent and emotionally resilient learners who can independently and successfully make sustainable healthy lifestyle choices and pursue personalised sporting and physically active pathways (including those for the gifted and talented) through the opportunities offered in their local and wider community.” St. John’s has become an active member of the BPSS since 2015-2016.

Sun Safe Schools – Gained Award

St Johns’ gained the Sun Safe School Award in July 2016.  The Sun Safe Schools Award is the first and only accreditation scheme of its kind to launch in the UK with the key objective to prevent skin cancer through education.  To achieve this award we make sun safety a priority at our school. Sun safety is taught through assemblies, lessons, newsletters and leaflets home. Alongside the standard school cap, we have introduced Sahara hats so children can protect their head, face and neck. We actively encourage children to bring a factor 30+ sunscreen to school to apply throughout the day, to drink plenty of water and to find shade during hot spells.

Sainsbury’s School Games Kitemark – Gained GOLD Award

school-games-goldSt John’s gained the GOLD award in July 2016.The Sainsbury’s School Games Kitemark is a Government led awards scheme launched in 2012 to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community. Schools in England are able to assess themselves across bronze, silver and gold levels of the kitemark.  To gain the kitemark Schools need to provide 2 hours of PE and sport within the curriculum every week, provide opportunities for extra curricular sporting activities, provide opportunities for children to compete amongst others in their school and children in other schools, develop children in sports leadership and officiation, display competitive sports on a school notice board and provide all children opportunities to take part in a selection of competitive sports.

Healthy Schools London – Gained Bronze Award

healthy-schools-bronze-logoSt John’s gained the BRONZE award in June 2016. Healthy Schools London is a programme launched at the GLA (City Hall) on Thursday 25 April 2013 that helps schools in supporting the health and wellbeing of their pupils. The award scheme sponsored by the Mayor of London, recognises and celebrates schools that are making a difference for their pupils to be healthy, happy and achieve. St. John’s aim to have achieved at least the SILVER award by the end of the year 2016-2017.

STARS School Travel Plan – Gained GOLD Award

16-gold-star-kitemark-1St John’s gained the GOLD award in July 2016.  STARS – Sustainable Travel: Active, Responsible, Safe – is an accreditation scheme for schools, nurseries and colleges to inspire young Londoners to travel sustainably, actively, responsibly and safely.  In doing this, STARS empowers pupils and improves the safety and wellbeing of the whole community. It also encourages active travel behaviour and improves the environment around the school.

Living the Olympic and Paralympic Values

St John’s School has been recognised as living the Paralympic and Olympic Values in our lives and through our actions.

Challenge Partners

The mission of Challenge Partners is to improve pupils’ outcomes and reduce educational inequality through effective collaboration, enabling every pupil to experience the combined wisdom of the education system. 

To work towards our mission, we have collectively adopted these four core aims that guide what we do:

  • Improve pupils’ examination results at a rate above the national average and accelerate progress of the disadvantaged
  • Enable all our schools to improve at a rate above the national average
  • Create more national leaders and outstanding schools that fulfil the Teaching Schools criteria
  • Develop a world class, self-improving and sustainable system that contributes to national research and policy-making

Barnet Online Safety Mark – Coming soon!

Schools who wish to obtain a ‘Barnet Online Safety Mark’ will need to show evidence for actions taken each half term at their chosen level of bronze, silver or gold, along with the impact of their activity on children in their school. The six themes are: Behaving respectfully online + keeping passwords safe, Cyber bullying (anti bullying week),  Keeping personal information safe, How to report an issue or concern, Understanding what can you trust on the web, Dealing with change and transition and reflection. This year St. John’s are aiming to achieve at least the SILVER Barnet Online Safety Mark 2016-2017.

Eco Schools Award – Coming Soon!

Eco-Schools is a global programme engaging millions of children across 64 different countries, making it the largest schools programme in the world.

For more than 20 years Eco-Schools has been empowering children to drive change and improve their environmental awareness through the same simple seven-step process that has been used successfully across the world.

Eco-Schools improves pupils’ skills, raises environmental awareness, improves the school environment and also creates financial savings for schools as well as a whole host of other benefits. This year we are aiming to achieve the Eco Schools Bronze Award.
